Kambano More Mitro

History

A dance from Eastern Greek Macedonia. I learnt it from Fido Wagler in July 2007.

Rhythm

The dance is in 9/8, musically it has the form slow, slow, slow, quick, slow (2-2-2-1-2). The steps follow this pattern, except at the start of the second sequence where there are two quick steps in the first slow beat.

Steps

Start in a line with arms in a V hold, facing centre.

Lift the left foot, then bring it around and cross behind, then step to the side with the right, all slow steps. Lift the left foot with a little bounce (quick), the step across in front with the left (slow).

Quickly step to the side with the right, then quickly step across in front with the left. (It helps to just step on the ball of the right foot, this keeps the step short.) Step to the side with the right, then step across in front with the left (both slow). Finally give a quick lift with the right, then step to the side with the right (slow).

Start the dance at the beginning of any musical phrase. Listen for the quick beat to find the phrasing - 1-2-3-and-4.
