Batrna

History

A Vlach dance. I learnt it from David Roberts in July 2007.

Rhythm

The dance is in an even 4/4 rhythm but the dance has a 7-beat sequence, so it goes out of sync with the music.

Steps

Start in a line with arms in a belt hold, facing right of centre. If you don't have belts a basketweave hold will do but make sure the line doesn't get stretched.

Step to the side with the right, then bring the left foot towards the right (but not enough to bring them together), both quick steps. Do this twice.

Step to the side with the right, cross in front with the left, then replace the right. These are all slow steps.

Step to the side with the left, then bring the right foot towards the left without closing, both quick steps.

Step to the side with the left, then lift the right, both quick.

There is a short introduction, the dance starts at the beginning of any musical phrase.

Music

Batrna from Balkan Spirit 7 produced by David Roberts.
